The navel-gazers

This installation is the result of the Master in Media & Information Design. It's made out of porcelain tiles, MDF and high paint gloss.

The belly button is a sensitive and intimate part of our body. We’ve all got one and just like a fingerprint they’re all unique. It’s a quirky reminder of the moment we left our mother’s body and became an individual, trying to connect with others. Though sometimes we need to reconnect with ourselves. ‘Navel-gazing’ (or meditating on your own navel) can be a helpful technique. Although it’s also another word for narcissism. Self-worship is flourishing within our individualistic society. It increasingly leads to uncertainty and loneliness amongst others.

With this work, Annelien stripped down her beloved ones to their bare essence to create this series of intimate portraits. She invites you to connect with them, just like you would with yourself.
