Ravenstein is located near the ‘Kunstberg’. ‘Kunstberg’ is a historic site in the center of Brussels. It is the art district of the city. Ravenstein isn’t connected to art. It is a misplaced shopping gallery and is now only just as a passage between the central station and the Bozar. I want to give the gallery a new function that is connected to the location. The function of connecting people through art and culture.

I want to create a double circulation in de gallery. A fast circulation, of pedestrians that used the gallery as a passage. This is already present. And a slow circulation of people that want to dwell in the Ravenstein.

My project is a consideration of a collective working space and living space for artists. It is an experiment on the experience created by unclear borders between private and public, converting living to it’s basic needs and connecting living with making of art. It is a ritualistic architecture in which I make the conditions to live in. The artist is the maker. 


With this experiment I want to get answers on the questions:

_ How will artists react to the conditions I which they has to live?

_ How will this way of living influence there way of making art?

_ How can this way of living become a performance?

_ How will artists react to living with unclear borders between public and private?

_ How will this way of living influence there way of making art?

_ How will artists react to working with unclear borders between public and private?

_ How will this way of working influence there way of making art?

_ What kind of experience could pedestrians have by seeing the artist working and living in those conditions?


Guided by those questions I ask myself: ”which kind of space can I create to test all the questions.

The shops and offices will be strip down to the structure. So I can start from an open, blank space.  In this open space I want to create a living unit by concerting living to its basic needs. These basic needs are reduced to 3 function rooms: ‘function room eat’, ‘function room sleep’, ‘function room wash’. Each function is then linked to an interior object: a stove for eating, a matrass for sleeping and a tab and toilet for washing. The function rooms are connected by a bowl that serves as the transportation of water inside the living unit. The bowl will bring water from ‘the function room wash’ to ‘the function room eat’. The water will there be used for cooking and cleaning. The bowl will also bring water to ‘the function room sleep’ to drink during the night.
The living unit will be archetype of a house that is split in two. These two parts are then sewn together by a staircase. All the living units are connected by public passages that run trough the units.
The space around the units will serve as an atelier for the artists.
The possible outcomes could be:
_ That artists and pedestrians are going to live with a bit less comfort.
_ That artists will be more oke with showing there work before it is finished.
_ That this way of living will influence there way of making art.
_ That they will change there way of living to the times where it is less crowed.
_ That artists will be oke with less privacy.
