Prof. Dr. Katrien Foubert holds a master's degree in music (violin) from the Conservatoire de Bruxelles, and a master's degree in music therapy from LUCA School of Arts. During her doctoral and postdoctoral studies, she developed innovative methods to include musical interaction in psychiatric diagnostic and therapeutic assessments of patients with personality disorders and autism spectrum disorders. Currently, her research focuses on the study of musical-improvisational processes in relation to mental health and psychopathology. Her research has been supported by national and European grants.
Foubert is connected as a music therapist to the University Psychiatric Centre KU Leuven. She is professor in the bachelor- and master program music therapy at LUCA School of Arts, and professor at the faculty of medicine KU Leuven. Foubert works as a senior researcher at the LUCA Music & Drama research unit and at the Department of Development and Regeneration at the KU Leuven Faculty of Medicine. She is a member of the Leuven Brain Institute (KU Leuven), and is also affiliated with the Centre for Contextual Psychiatry (KU Leuven).
Foubert is regularly invited as a guest lecturer in music therapy courses in the Netherlands, Italy and the Czech Republic. She has presented at more than 50 national and international conferences and published in several international peer-reviewed journals. She is currently a board member of the consortium of 8 universities for research in music therapy (Bergen, Oxford, Philadelphia, Oslo, Leuven, Cambridge, Jyväskylä and Melbourne).
