Kenny Wheeler, a Canadian jazz trumpeter (1930–2014), was an influential composer and bandleader, known for his unique style that combined elements of jazz, avant-garde and modern classical music. He was born in Toronto, Canada, and studied music at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto.

 

 

Kenny Wheeler, a Canadian jazz trumpeter (1930–2014), was an influential composer and bandleader, known for his unique style that combined elements of jazz, avant-garde and modern classical music.

He moved to the United Kingdom, where he played an important role in the European jazz scene. Wheeler was famous for his use of idiosyncratic harmonies and his lyrical approach to improvisation. He collaborated with prominent jazz musicians, including Keith Jarrett, John Abercrombie and his own ensembles, including the Kenny Wheeler Big Band. He received recognition for his contributions to jazz, including several awards (BBC Jazz Awards 2006) and honours (Order of Canada 1991, Honorary Doctorates University of Toronto in recognition of his impact on music education). His innovative compositions are still appreciated and performed today.
