The master Media and Information Design is one of the first to offer students the possibilities to explore the new emerging field of visual research within a state of the art design practice and to let students develop work across boundaries, within the ever-expanding contemporary fine art and design disciplines.
For your master graduate project, you choose your own artistic project. You realize this work and present it to a jury of internal and external experts during a public presentation. You contextualize your work with a thesis with which you situate your work within or against existing literature and debates. This proves that you can orient yourself within the field of the chosen artistic discipline.
For your master's thesis, you can make use of technical support and productional assistance and you rely on the advice of the tutors. Nevertheless, with your master's thesis, you prove that you work to a large extent independently.
In addition to individual and group tutorials, you will follow specific theory classes as well as interdisciplinary seminars. You will actively follow the latest developments in the contemporary art scene, regularly visiting exhibitions with fellow students and meeting with artists, curators and other actors from the national and international scene. As a result, you will develop your critical-reflective outlook on the contemporary art world. In the Critical Practice course, you further develop your discursive and analytical skills. This will help you to improve your level of reflection on the context and practices of contemporary art.
Seminars are an integral part of the master's program. LUCA has a particularly rich and diversified range of research seminars fed by the research groups of our campuses from Brussels, Ghent, Genk and Leuven. Each campus has its own researchers, research traditions and disciplines.
Together with your coordinator, you will select two seminars that match your ambitions. You can also choose from the courses given at the KU Leuven or its associated university colleges.
Your teachers are graphic designers, information designers, typographers, media artists, data visualizers, web designers, researchers and theorists. They encourage you to be critical of your own work and to extensively investigate what other designers, artists or theorists in our field do, think or mean. They teach you how to communicate clearly about your work and how to substantiate your decisions.
Numerous experts guide you in the practical workshops: Sandy Claes, Boris Debackere, Steven Devleminck, Peter Jacquemyn, Tom Pijnenborg, Johan Van Looveren, Bart Vandeput and Klaas Verpoest.
You will receive technical guidance from Jan Pillaert and Stephan Bourdon.

• Shapeshifters is an annual public lecture series and already brought more than 70 international designers and artists on stage in the Beursschouwburg in Brussels. The lectures inspire the debate on visual culture and formed the basis for two international publications.
• Former students share their experiences about the professional field with students during our annual "DIP-Talks" evening. Alumni are also welcome.

Are you graduating as an artistic master and would you still like to become a teacher? Then you can opt for a shortened educational master's program. EDU by LUCA offers the opportunity to acquire your competencies in secondary and part-time art education at an accelerated pace. Students who take the shortened course of 60 credits sign up for a one-year full-time program. If you want to combine work and family, you can choose to spread the shortened route over two years. Edu bundles the (abbreviated) teacher training courses for secondary education offered by KU Leuven, LUCA School of Arts and VIVES.
