Supported Studio Master Classes – from Creation to Presentation

For artists, curators and facilitators working with artists in care contexts. 

The “Supported Studio Master Classes” focus on different aspects and practices around supported studios. A supported studio is an art studio that provides professional working conditions and artistic guidance to artists who need additional support due to intellectual, psychological or social vulnerabilities, while recognising them first and foremost as autonomous artists rather than as care recipients. The master classes bring together artists, studio coordinators, curators, facilitators and researchers to reflect on aspects such as authorship, autonomy, language and presentation, and on how work developed in supported contexts can circulate within the broader contemporary art field without being framed through a medical or care-based lens.

The 2026 edition, entitled “From Creation to Presentation”, concentrates on the trajectory from studio practice to public visibility. Through keynote lectures, a panel discussion and workshops, renowned international experts will address how artistic work is shaped within supported studio environments, how selections and mediations are made, and how exhibition formats, vocabulary and institutional frameworks influence the perception of the artist, the work and the studio. Charlotte Hollinshead is Head of Artist Development at ActionSpace, London, the studio where Turner Prize 2025 winner Nnena Kalu works. Thomas Röske is Director of the Prinzhorn Collection in Heidelberg and a leading authority on outsider art and art created in psychiatric contexts. Florian Reese is the founder and manager of Atelier 10 in Vienna and previously initiated Atelier Gugging at the renowned Art Brut Center Gugging. Pierre Muylle was Director of MadMusée in Liège and has worked as an independent curator with international expertise in Art Brut since 2017. The master class offers critical perspectives and concrete case studies to support a responsible and artist-centred approach to presenting supported studio practices in professional art contexts.
