Exchange programme in the BA Visual Arts
Campus Ghent / Sint-Lucas

In the atelier Mixed Media, there is a focus on the development of an autonomous artistic practice, while addressing the socio-political roles of art production. Mixed Media offers an interdisciplinary environment, where art not necessarily stems from one discipline but rather from the senses. Our students explore new forms of seeing, hearing, smelling and feeling, to find their own position with the field of the arts and society. Students actively look for an audience both inside and outside the school, through exhibitions, lectures, performances and concerts.  These interactions with the public are a crucial part of the artistic growth process. The atelier helps with the exploration of the different artistic possibilities, methodologies and ways of reflecting on one's own work. How does a student start up an artistic practice and how does he / she position it within the art world. Throughout the educational program there are weekly conversations with the main tutors, and alongside guest tutors and professional artists/ performers are invited for lectures and workshops. Studio or atelier time is alternated with an extensive practical and theoretical program provided by the department, to open students to less familiar parts of the artistic practice. In the first year the atelier creates an open space for all possible thoughts, creation, and action, focusing mainly on experimentation. In the second year, students will work in an open, interdisciplinary environment, designing artistic methodologies, working individually or collectively with supervisors. In the third year, students will present their ideas, concepts and works to an audience outside of school.

Programme for exchange students

The Visual Arts programme on campus Ghent offers academically oriented BA and MA degrees in Textile Design, Graphic Design and Fine Arts. Within Fine Arts students can either develop a hybrid fine arts practice or choose to focus on one of the following disciplines: Sculpture-Glass-Ceramics, Illustration, Painting, Mixed Media, Drawing-Printmaking. Exchange students are welcome to join the programme in 2BA or 3BA (first semester, second semester or a full year) or in MA (first semester). The study progress at your home university and the quality of your portfolio will determine your  enrolment in either BA or MA at LUCA.

The atelier will be the main part of your study programme at LUCA. Additionally, you can opt for drawing classes, English taught theoretical courses and Dutch classes (off campus). A welcome week with introductions to Flemish historical and contemporary art, the city of Gent and the campus is organised each semester.

We can offer you an exchange programme of 30 ECTS credits. Detailed information about the offered course units can be found via

In the past years, all students of the atelier Mixed Media took part in a variety of festivals and public performances such as the European Media Art Festival in Osnabrück in Duitsland, Slow 36H in het Concertgebouw in Brugge, Get Out of the Paté in Kassel, Documenta 14, Momentum #03 on the roof of de Singel in Antwerp,… the yearly Mayday Mayday Festival in Campo, Gent.
