Fabricating objects often starts out with measuring, for instance with traditional measurement tools like calipers and rulers. It is hard for novice makers to choose the right measurement tool, and on top of that operating and interpreting the measured value correctly is critical. Inaccuracies in measuring is one of the major sources of errors during construction projects. With traditional woodworking tools, measuring is an essential skill for designing and fabricating objects. Digital fabrication tools implicitly use units and measurements, but even there the process of designing, fabricating and assembling is still often use physical measuring tools. My research explores how digital fabrication can be done without the use of measuring. I explore the idea of "Unitless fabrication" as a way to lower the threshold when designing and fabricating objects using digital fabrication tools for novice makers.
