From Swerts to Hollywood

Piet Swerts composed TATTVAS – The Five Elements, a five-movement work for a distinctive and unusual ensemble. This virtuosic composition is scored for symphony orchestra, piano, celesta, percussion, and a flexible saxophone quartet. Swerts translates the unique character of the five elements—Akasha (ether), Vayu (air), Tejas (fire), Apas (water), and Prithvi (earth)—into music. In the water movement, for example, flowing rhythms and brief imitative figures evoke the sound of cascading droplets and rippling water.

In Symphonic Dances from West Side Story, Leonard Bernstein combines elements of the Western European classical tradition, such as leitmotifs, with musical figures and timbres drawn from jazz and Latin American music. The full symphonic forces bring the score vividly to life, making it nearly impossible for listeners to remain still.

Finally, LUCA Philharmonic presents highlights from the oeuvre of John Williams. Renowned for reviving the grand tradition of symphonic film music, Williams is celebrated for his memorable melodies and sweeping orchestral soundscapes. Our students perform the vibrant Symphonic Suite from Far and Away and move audiences with Sayuri’s Theme from Memoirs of a Geisha. The concert concludes with selections from the heroic score of The Patriot and Hedwig’s Theme from Harry Potter—a melody that lingers in the memory long after the final note has faded.
