Varun Sasindran, PhD in the Arts

With this artistic research project I want to investigate the mnemonic capacities of documentary film making in relation to the traumatic historic event. The main objective of the research is to examine how film could play a significant role in transmitting cultural memory in a context of traumatic and repressed historic events?

I want to research this through a documentary on a female prisoner Hajra Hadžić (1955-1992) who was detained in Omarska camp (Bosnia Herzegovina) during the Bosnian War (1992-1995) and eventually killed. Omarska is located in the North-West of Bosnia in Prijedor, which was once a mining and production plant, later to be converted to a concentration camp during the war in May 1992.

Through my research, I intent to explore the possibilities: How can archive materials be used creatively to transcend the narrative beyond the representation and conveyance of historical facts? How can digital design technologies play an innovative role in overcoming the limitations caused by the lack of archive materials?
