WEAVING FROM THE CHAWPI: BETWEEN TWO SIDES OF THE CLOTH

The textile department invites Peruvian artist and cultural worker María José Murillo. During the lecture she will present her practice and presents weaving as a living dialogue between past and future, ancestry, and contemporaneity. Working across the Andean backstrap loom, as well as floor, vertical, and digital looms, she explores textiles as complex systems of care, thought, communication, and transformation. Her work embraces the chawpi, the space between two faces of the cloth. It is the point of encounter where opposites do not cancel each other out but coexist in dynamic tension, forming a plural, layered woven whole.
