Migraine has been a source of inspiration for many artists. The link between this neurological condition and music, however, has never been thoroughly researched. This PhD project therefore attempts to shed a light on the connection between migraine and music, and explores whether the experience of a migraine attack can found the creation of a musical work. This work will take shape in an “experimental opera”, and more specifically an intermedial sound-art-performance that combines vocals and electronics. This doctoral project mainly focuses on the existential, symbolic and phenomenological aspects of the migraine condition. In addition, a profound insight in the neurological and physical aspects of an attack will be obtained and used to attain the artistic objectives. On the one hand, this opera seeks to be a reproduction of a migraine-attack that leads its audience into a surrealistic, absurdist dreamland filled with confusion and physical discomfort. On the other hand, it strives to be a reflection on the migraine condition as an inescapable part of life.
