Julie Michael, PhD in the Arts
The project, situated at the intersection of musical performance, composition, and pedagogy, will examine audience engagement through interaction. I will develop new modes of audience interaction, building interactive elements into existing repertoire and composing new interactive works which I will regularly perform for audiences. After each performance I will solicit audience feedback in the form of surveys or interviews designed with the help of a sociology professional. This feedback will guide the revision of my interactive pieces and the creation of new ones. My research will be disseminated in the form of concerts, lectures, video recordings released online, and a dissertation which will outline best practices in interactive performances, a key element missing from current research on interaction in music.
