Mariske Broeckmeyer, PhD in the Arts
Migraine is a chronic condition affecting 11% of the world’s population. Many artists and musicians have turned to their migrainous sufferings as a source of inspiration. As a singer, sound artist and migraine patient, Mariske Broeckmeyer researches Migraine Art and Migraine Music. Combining these findings and her own experiences, she engages in a compositional practice, developing musical pieces, which are both highly personal statements and universal reflections on this intriguing condition. This doctoral project aims for an aesthetic of failure and focuses on the existential, symbolic and phenomenological aspects of the migraine condition. In addition, a profound insight in the neurological and physical implications of an attack will be obtained and used to attain the artistic objectives.
