Over POST ORIENTALISM - A Kid's Instinct:

Afmeting: 291x150x150

Jaartal: 2020

Materiaal: ABS, Glas,

Over Ward:

Ferm.

#4 | Leto Keunen & Karel Op ‘t Eynde

Titel: Dress Boy

Afmeting: Ca. 170cm x 80cm

Jaartal: 2021

Materiaal: Beech wood

Over Dress Boy:

During a week-long design workshop, we delved into the processes and possibilities of bronze casting wood turning and wood bending, with this beech dress-boy as a result.

A dress-boy replaces the lonesome chair in many bedrooms, barely visible under the pile of clothes carelessly thrown on top. The body of this piece is comprised of a main pillar, turned on the lathe and three legs, all bent by using a wood lamination technique. The main pillar is highlighted with a bronze ornament, providing an elegant detail and a place to store small accessories and jewellery.

Starting from unfinished beech planks, we shaped this piece of elegant furniture that carries your wearables is an organised manner, while exploring these beautiful materials.

Special thanks to David Geraerts and Luca Product Design

Over Leto Keunen

Product Design serves me as a method to observe, redefine and criticise my environment from a theoretical point of view. I want to raise awareness with the work I make. Finding the cause and origin of the problem through research rather than to invent another nice but unnecessary product.

Sustainability, empathy and storytelling are important pillars in my design but they are also my personal core values. I put passion in my work and in everything I do. It makes me vulnerable, but then again, it adds value and my signature to my work. That’s why people around me indirectly and unconsciously influence the work I make. I believe the best results are made by collaboration. I really want to join forces with and learn from other designers and participants with different backgrounds, talents and interests. This, for me, is the only way towards true innovation.

While AI and other technologies emerge, some crafts could be neglected. I try to enrich crafts through design, to shine light on the skills, knowledge and traditions of the materials and processes. I want to keep this in mind and focus on these crafts by placing them in a contemporary perspective.

Over Profile Karel Op’ t Eynde

Ever since I was little, I’ve experienced an enormous inquisitiveness for my surroundings. An intense hunger to teach myself everything there is to learn about craft, age-old disciplines and material knowledge will always push me to go that extra mile. Telling stories by shaping these materials, is the essence of my work.

#5 | Leto Keunen

Titel: Phonic Fiber

Afmeting: Ca. 450cm x 36cm

Jaartal: 2021

Materiaal: Felt, silk, cotton, linen

Over Phonic Fiber:

Phonic Fiber is a Textile design made with felt. This work embodies my personal experience as a designer. A search for strength and security in my voice and narrative as a designer.

When I started this project I felt disoriented and insecure. Insecure about myself as a designer but also as a person. I used this project as a quest to reclaim my point of view, motivation and self-confidence.

The starting point of my search is my voice. If you would listen carefully, you would hear a grain in my voice. This grain indicates a damaged voice that I have had since my childhood. A sulcus on my left vocal cord and a hyperplasia on my right. My right vocal cord has, in a way, tried to fix the groove on my left vocal cord, which has led to an overcompensation. This makes my voice hoarse and weaker than a typical voice. This also implies that my lifestyle has an influence on my voice. I cannot talk for a long time without being in pain. I cannot sing for hours nor read out loud without difficulty. Will my voice give in and turn hoarse after long use? And will I get painful cramps at insecure times, feeling as if my vocal cords have tightened? This physical pain and frailty is a metaphor for my quest for what I want to express as a designer. The symbolic search for my voice as a designer is realised by making the physical fragility and doubt in my voice tangible.

Over the past few months I made the fragility in my voice tangible as a symbol to help me find my voice as a designer. Through design I translated a physical insecurity into strength and found a way to embrace my doubt. In this design, the transition from doubt to certainty is described from left to right. In this way, the different phases I go through in the use of my voice are represented. The fragility and fatigue starting from the left and the transition to the far right, where a strong, harmonious and certain ending is depicted. By making the different phases of my voice tangible, I reveal the progress that I also experienced as a designer. A process during which I transformed doubt and uncertainty into strength and security.

#6 | Lotte Hermans

Titel: Lippenbalsem

Afmeting: 73 x 110

Jaartal: 2020

Materiaal: /

Over Lippenbalsem:

Over Lotte:

#7 | Gina Siliquini

Titel : The Silly Queen

Afmeting : 80 cm x 85 cm

Jaartal : 2021

Materiaal : glanzend papier

Over The Silly Queen:

The three characters from my childhood drawings, the doctor, the angel and the witch. Not as an alter ego or identity crisis. Because I knew that taking ownership would create a huge distance between me and my fantasy. I don’t want to comprehend, I want to shape it, so I got of the stage.

The soul of the circus is inside me after all. The real big deal wasn’t the thing that fascinated me, it was the journey towards it. More of a stroll than a sprint to the finish.
