Mise en scène

Through my work, I try to capture and cherish personal valuables and memories that are connected to a certain place: like you can do with little objects ore common things. I try to do this by first collecting all the elements that are essential to the memory of that place, after which I put them back together to be able to construct that place as I experienced it. This way, I try to create an image that makes you relive the moment when you look at it.  The way I see it, it is essentially the building of a viewing box, or the scenery for the theatre. A mise-en-scène.

This is very similar to some old theatre techniques, or the way certain artists from the renaissance built their work. For myself, that mise-en-scène is very recognisable, but I always try to keep the image suggestive: so that it can also give someone else a certain remembrance. There are no characters in my sceneries, to make sure the viewer can make his or her own story with it. I give only one thing, but this creates infinite possibilities.
