Sarah Van Marcke is an artist working with photography, video and installations. She is interested in the act of generating methods and strategies in function of control of our life and of our biotope. Strategies that are developed as protection against disorder, the uncontrollability of our destiny and universal chaos. She observes how people consciously use a form of fiction to get a grip on the uncontrollable. A fiction that can express itself in rituals, strategies, images, literature...
In her series she repeatedly worked around one protagonist, someone who – more or less - compulsively tries to shape a physical and / or mental space. Examples of such subjects in her photography and video's are Le Corbusier, Oscar Niemeyer and Dom Hans van der Laan. In studying their lives, she discovers a thorough urge to control and she works with their pragmatic methodologies.
In 2007 Sarah Van Marcke received a Master degree from Luca School of Arts Brussels and in 2017 she became a Postgraduate in Research at Sint Lucas Antwerp.
Sarah Van Marcke has been showing works in solo – and group shows at FoMu (Antwerp), De Brakke Grond (Amsterdam), Bozar (Brussels), BIP (Liège), Voies Off (Arles), De Garage (Mechelen), Copenhagen Photo Festival, Museum of Photography (Thessaloniki), Museum Dr Guislain (Ghent). In response to her recent research she has been invited to develop, as artistic director, The Festival of Control (2019); a project connecting her own practice with that of fellow artists, scientists and researchers.
