Marc Tooten studied at the Brussels Royal Conservatory and pursued further studies at the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam with Ervin Schiffer.
During the course of his career, he has been the leader of the viola section of various esteemed orchestras and chamber orchestras such as the Beethoven Academie, the Royal Flemish Philharmonic, the Radio Chamber Philharmonic(Hilversum, the Netherlands), and the Orquestra Ciudad of Granada. From 1979 to 1996, heheld the position of first soloist at the famous chamber orchestraI Fiamminghi, directed by Rudolf Werthen. Together with this orchestra hehas toured as a soloist in Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Spain, the USA and Japan. Currently, Marc Tooten is first soloist at the South Netherlands Philharmonicin Eindhoven, the Netherlands.
Marc Tootens primary musical interest is directed towards chamber music, in which field hehas gained international acclaim: "Hemasters the entire chamber music literature which hecherishes with flexibility and adaptability". He is a member of the Salzburger Solisten, with whom he participated at the most renowned chamber music festivals in Germany, Austria, France and Switzerland. Among the musicians with whom hecollaborated are Abdel Rahman el Bacha, Eduard Brunner, Andràs Adorjàn and Martin Lovett. With the Arriaga string quartetMarc Tooten collaborated with renowned musicians, such as Martha Argerich, Boris Berezovsky and Itamar Golan. In 2009, he founded together with violinist Orsolya Horváth and violoncellist Luc Tooten the Trio Tooten.
Marc Tootenis an enthusiastic teacher: as professor viola and chamber music at the Lemmens Institutein Leuven(Belgium) and the Maastricht Conservatory(the Netherlands), he is pleased to impart his musical experience and insights to young musicians.
