Information about the course of the Artistic Aptitude Test

You want to register for the Artistic Aptitude Test in Music at LUCA Music for the Classical Performance Programme as a bachelor student. On the previous page you already found the date of the deadline for online registration for this test and the date when you are expected on campus. On this page you will find more info on what this test entails and how it will proceed.

The Artistic Aptitude Test consists of a written motivation, an artistic test and an interview. In addition, an orientation test for the ear-training program is organized on the same day (you can find a sample test below).
A few days after the deadline of the online section, the detailed schedule will be delivered via email.

PART 1 - ONLINE 

Written motivation

Upon registration, you will receive a link to the online environment where you will find instructions for this. In a short text you clarify your motivation for the chosen programme.

PART 2 - ON CAMPUS

Artistic test on Campus Lemmens
 

As an instrumentalist or singer, you will perform a number of compositions in a variety of styles representative of your technical and musical abilities. We expect this at fourth grade DKO level. Below is the required program for each instrument.

Accordion

3 works of your choice.

Carillon

3 works of your choice.

Recorder

3 works of your choice in contrasting style.

Guitar

3 works from different stylistic periods including at least 1 étude (Villa Lobos level).

Harp

3 works of your choice including 1 étude and 1 Baroque and/or Romantic work.

Wood Winds/Brass/
Saxophone

3 works from different style periods including 1 étude.

Organ

3 works including minimum 1 work by J.S.Bach (or other Baroque composer) and min. 1 work from later style period (19th, 20th or 21st century).

Piano

1 fast etude of your choice, 1 polyphonic work by Johann Sebastian Bach (e.g. Prelude and fugue, three-part invention, etc.), a fast movement in sonata form by J.Haydn, W.A.Mozart or L.van Beethoven and 1 work of your choice.

Percussion

1 work for classical or rudimental small drum (e.g. Delécluse, Coutelier, Markovich, Wilcoxon).

1 work for four-pole melodic percussion (marimba or vibraphone)

1 work for timpani or drums or set-up of your choice.

Strings

3 works from different style periods.

Voice

Minimum 4 works (arias, songs) from different style periods in at least 2 different languages (choose from Italian, German, French, Spanish, English or Latin) and preferably from memory.

The test will be judged by the teaching staff of your instrument.
An accompanist will be provided for singers only. You are free to bring your own accompanist.

Interview on Campus Lemmens

A brief interview with the judges will assess your motivation and personal ambitions.

Participation in this test is mandatory but not binding. The example below gives a concrete picture of the assumed basic competencies to start in Bachelor 1.

RESULTS

Within a week of the test, you will be notified of the results of the Artistic Aptitude Test.

DATA

  • Deadline online part  07.02.24: test on February 16th 2024
  • Deadline online part 24.06.24: test on July 1st 2024
  • Deadline online part 30.08.24: test on September 5th 2024

A detailed schedule of the day will be sent to you by email a few days before the Artistic Aptitude Test.

The Artistic Aptitude Test consists of several parts. You will receive a link to the online admission test by email after your registration and go through the different parts. After that, you will receive an invitation for the additional interview with teachers and/or possibly a practical test on campus.
