Animation LUCA C-mine Genk produces a film for Animal Shelter Genk

Last week a very special screening was presented at LUCA School of Arts C-mine Genk. The master students of the Animation department created an animated film for the Animal Shelter of Genk, depicting the typical itinerary of a shelter dog: 'Alfie'.

During the course 'Animation in Context', the Animation students at LUCA C-mine Genk are tasked to produce an animated film for an external client. This year the assignment was offered by the Animal Shelter of Genk. Since the public at large is not familiar with the daily operation at an animal shelter, the students thought it would be a good idea to depict these activities in an animated film. They devised the story of "Alfie," a little dog who lives on the streets and is picked up by the animal shelter. We follow the search for a suitable adoptive family for Alfie.

The students wrote the screenplay, created a storyboard and designed the characters and environment. These designs were then presented to the Animal Shelter for their feedback. Subsequently, an 'animatic' was produced: a film version of the storyboard accompanied by a rough soundtrack. This was also submitted for approval, after which the development of the final animation could begin. From animating (frame by frame in 2D), to coloring, to finalizing the sound - the entire film was put together from A to Z by the students. The completion of the entire project ended up taking an entire year.

On Thursday, Jan. 25, the final product was presented on campus with an initial public screening. Employees of the Animal Shelter were also present to offer a word of explanation on the collaboration. The screening was also attende by several local media:
