Disappearance or vanishing indicates temporality, limited visibility and presence in time, changeability. Disappearance concerns transitional forms or appearance. Sometimes hard to distinguish and by nature irreversible, disappearance simultaneously happens to- and escapes our perception. The research project Upon Disappearance investigates disappearance as content and as concept in the arts and in fields of study and creation. Part of the project examines how visual disappearance can be converted into an auditory form and perception, using non-visual modes of perception to open up new perspectives on ephemerality and temporarity.
Aim is to enter and explore the space of temporality, irreversible fragility, limited appearance, and vanishing in order, first, to comprehend this transitional nature and, second, to apply it to in the process of creation.
