Ensemble New Music
Bart Van Beneden, conductor
Social unrest creates the need for loud voices: with Worker's Union, Louis Andriessen explores the tension between individual freedom and severe discipline. The work calls for any loud-sounding ensemble and gives the musicians strict rythm but with free choice of notes. In his own words: "It is difficult to play in ensemble and to remain in step, similar to organizing and carrying out political actions.”
Worker's Union is flanked by works of Johnson, Berio and Crumb - all contemporaries of Andriessen - and 2 living composers: Thomas Adès and a creation by LUCA student Shir Ran.
