MFA requirement for students

MFA requirement for students in the new academic year

To further intensify the fight against the growing danger of cybercrime and online attacks, the use of multi-factor authentication (MFA) with the KU Leuven Authenticator app will become mandatory for all LUCA students starting from academic year 2023-2024.

In recent years, numerous universities and colleges at home and abroad became victims of a cyber attack, which temporarily led to full or partial suspension of their activities and to economic damage and loss of reputation. After mandatory MFA use was introduced for all staff members in 2021, it is now also becoming mandatory for students.

Many students today already use KU Leuven Authenticator on a voluntary basis. The app is an easy way to replace the LUCA password, while adding extra security.

The MFA obligation for students will be introduced in 2 steps:

  • As of July 1, 2023, MFA will be mandatory for every new student enrolling at KU Leuven. When activating the account and creating the password, you will be asked to activate the KU Leuven Authenticator.
  • In the week of 13 November, MFA will become mandatory for all other students.  Not using the KU Leuven authenticator app yet? Then follow the 6 steps you can find through this link. Do this before November 13 to avoid being unable to log in after that date !
