Information about the course of the Artistic Aptitude Test

You want to register for the Artistic Aptitude Test in Music at LUCA Music for the Jazz Performance Programme as a bachelor student. On the previous page you already found the date of the deadline for online registration for this test and the date when you are expected on campus. On this page you will find more info on what this test entails and how it will proceed.

The Artistic Aptitude Test consists of a written motivation, an artistic test, a test of your general musical knowledge and an interview.

PART 1 - ONLINE 

Written motivation

Upon registration, you will receive a link to the online environment where you will find instructions for this. In a short text you clarify your motivation for the chosen programme.

PART 2 - ON CAMPUS

Artistic test on Campus Lemmens

Repertoire: 5 pieces including at least 1 Blues and 1 Rhythm Changes and 3 Jazz standards or compositions Prerequisites: exposition of the theme, improvisation using the correct scales and arpeggios, for chord instruments also a correct accompaniment. Bassists can accompany in 2-beat and walking bass, drummers can improvise on the chord progression and with tradings 4 and 8 bars in different styles (swing, Latin).

The test will be listened to by the professional group of your instrument.
An accompanist will be provided for singers only. You are free to bring your own accompanist.

Test general musical knowledge on campus Lemmens

The candidate is expected to be able to demonstrate their basic competencies in rhythmic, metrical, melodic and harmonic areas through two practical tests:

  1. Rhythm and metre
  • Clapping of some basic rhythms pre-recorded by the teacher, both in binary and ternary metre, first per measure and then over two measures;
  • Realization of a sight reading (short on-the-spot inspection) with basic rhythms in binary and ternary metre and with free filling in of some empty measures. The performance mode is free (saying, clapping, tapping, ...)

2. Melody and harmony

  • Singing (scat) of a few random notes, played on the piano (or pre-sung), in the middle, high and low registers;
  • Singing of a pre-played diphthong from bottom to top and naming this diphthong;
  • Singing along vocally (scat) of the highest sounding note of a pre-recorded chord progression, as well as secondarily of the lowest sounding note of the same progression.
  • Recognize and name the most common chord types: Major7, Minor7, Dominant7 and Semi-Diminished7.

Interview on Campus Lemmens

A brief interview with the judges will assess your motivation and personal ambitions.

RESULTS

Within a week of the test, you will be notified of the results of the Artistic Aptitude Test.

  • Deadline online part  07.02.24: test on February 16th 2024
  • Deadline online part 24.06.24: test on July 1st 2024
  • Deadline online part 30.08.24: test on September 5th 2024

A detailed schedule of the day will be sent to you by email a few days before the Artistic Aptitude Test.

The Artistic Aptitude Test consists of several parts. You will receive a link to the online admission test by email after your registration and go through the different parts. After that, you will receive an invitation for the additional interview with teachers and/or possibly a practical test on campus.
