How does a musical idea grow into an international collaboration, a recording and a live audiovisual performance?

Masterclass 8 oktober

New Zealand Emmy Award-winning film composer and music editor Stephen Gallagher (The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, The Beatles: Get Back and The Hobbit) will give a multidisciplinary masterclass on the world behind music, film, production and performance, together with the Belgian pianist and composer Daniel Verstappen, alumnus of LUCA School of Arts.

Daniel and Stephen got to know each other during Film Fest Gent 2025. That meeting grew into an international artistic collaboration and their joint Journey Symphony. The work was translated to the audiovisual stage and formed the opening of Echoes of the Future during the premiere on Pukkelpop last summer.
In collaboration with, among others, UHasselt and LUCA School of Arts they explored how live music, electronics, visuals and immersive technology can merge into a new concert experience.

In this masterclass, Stephen and Daniel will delve deeper into questions such as:

How do you write together from two different musical backgrounds? How does a composition develop during recording and production? How do you translate music from studio to stage? How do music, image and technology work together? And how do you build a project around an artistic idea that ultimately reaches its audience?

In short, a multidisciplinary masterclass for students of composition, instrument/music performance, pedagogy and for anyone interested in the crossover between music, film, technology and professional music practice.
