NTGent: Us, (k)now

'​Us, (k)now' is een krachtige en hoopvolle voorstelling over zwart bewustzijn en empowerment van de huidige generatie tieners.

2020 was het jaar van Covid. Maar ook van de Black Lives Matter beweging. Gebeurtenissen met een grote impact op jongeren. Hoe voelt het om op te groeien in deze vreemde mix van sociale onrust en beklemming? In 
Us, (k)now geven acht zwarte tienermeisjes hun blik op de toekomst. 
 
Dalilla Hermans is schrijfster en vaste columniste bij De Standaard. In februari 2020 maakte ze met Her(e)  haar debuut als theatermaker bij NTGent. Voor die voorstelling ging ze met een dertigtal zwarte vrouwen een weekend in afzondering. Op basis van de gesprekken schreef ze een tekst over hun leven in België. Over uitdagingen en hoop, werk en theater, familie en 'sisterhood'.

Her(e)  inspireerde Hermans om een stap verder te gaan. Tijdens de benauwende ‘paaspauze’ van 2021 trok ze zich met een groep zwarte meisjes terug voor een meerdaagse werksessie. Opnieuw was de ervaring van deze gesprekken magisch. De meisjes leerden niet alleen elkaar, maar ook zichzelf beter kennen. Het begeleidende team ontdekte hoezeer deze generatie van zwarte jongeren zichzelf gidst in een nieuwe bewustwording.

Us, (k)now  wordt een krachtige, hoopvolle voorstelling over zwart bewustzijn en de empowerment van de huidige generatie tieners. Een generatie die zoveel te vertellen heeft. Een generatie die zich nog belemmerd voelt door de ketens uit het verleden maar ook de moed en aanmoediging hebben om alles los te knippen. Een generatie die elkaar sterker maakt.

'Us, (k)now' is a powerful and hopeful performance about black consciousness and the empowerment of today's generation of teens.

2020 was the year of Covid. But also of the Black Lives Matter movement. Events with a big impact on young people. How does it feel to grow up in this strange mix of social unrest and oppression? In Us, (k)now  eight black teenage girls give their view on the future.

Dalilla Hermans is a writer and regular columnist with De Standaard.  In February 2020, she made her debut as a theater maker at NTGent with Her(e). To do so, she went into seclusion with about thirty black women for a weekend. On the basis of their conversations, she wrote a text about their lives in Belgium. About challenges and hope, work and theater, family and sisterhood.

Her(e)  inspired Hermans to go one step further. During the lockdown in the spring of 2021, she retreated with a group of black girls for a multi-day work session. Again, the experience of these conversations was magical. The girls got to know not only each other, but themselves better. The facilitating team discovered how much this generation of black youth is guiding itself into a new awareness.

Us, (k)now  will be a powerful, hopeful performance about black consciousness and the empowerment of today's generation of teens. A generation that has so much to say. A generation that still feels hampered by the chains of the past but also has the courage and encouragement to cut it all loose. A generation that makes each other stronger.
